The Jets let Legette fall into their laps, and walked away with a D. The Jets put a flag in the ground for Joe Milton III, 33 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Legette falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In pick No. 10 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick72
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. It fills a real need, too.
Pick112
Rnd4
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in No. 112 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick116
Rnd4
Renardo Green
They did well to land Renardo Green in the 116th pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick130
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 130th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick131
Rnd4
Tyler Davis
Tyler Davis at No. 131 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in pick No. 133 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick134
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
A straight-up fair deal on Theo Johnson at pick 134, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick156
Rnd5
Josh Newton
They robbed the room for Josh Newton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick164
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith slipping to Round 5, Pick 28 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick166
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joe Milton III this early at the 166th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick187
Rnd6
Malik Mustapha
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malik Mustapha in slot 187, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick245
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
Taking Frank Gore Jr. in Round 7, Pick 25 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
