Rob DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots

Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B+
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Patriots let Higgins fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. Call it larceny. Jay Higgins sat on the board until pick No. 194, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
If Mukuba pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 14th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that.
Pick26
Rnd1
Malaki Starks
In the Round 1 slot they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Emery Jones
Emery Jones at pick No. 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick45
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in pick 45 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 58th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick66
Rnd3
Mitchell Evans
Mitchell Evans at No. 66 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick78
Rnd3
Aireontae Ersery
A big swing on Aireontae Ersery at slot 78, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick82
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
Elic Ayomanor at Round 3, Pick 18 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick98
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick114
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
CJ Daniels at Round 4, Pick 18 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130
Rnd5
Jalen Milroe
Somehow Jalen Milroe was still sitting there in pick No. 130, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick194
Rnd7
Jay Higgins
The board fumbled Jay Higgins all the way to the 194th pick, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
