FutureB-
The Patriots let Restrepo fall into their laps, and walked away with a A-. The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Xavier Restrepo, the No. 16 name on the board, in the 228th pick. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will need Ersery to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. J.J. McCarthy gives the group a proven body among the projects.
In the end it comes back to Ashton Jeanty, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Ashton Jeanty
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ashton Jeanty in No. 41, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick42
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick72
Rnd3
Colston Loveland
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Colston Loveland at the 72nd pick is the proof. It fills a real need, too.
Pick85
Rnd3
Wyatt Milum
Circle this one: Wyatt Milum at the 85th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick98
Rnd3
Tyler Booker
You do not let an offensive lineman like Tyler Booker reach pick 98 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick99
Rnd3
Aireontae Ersery
They reached into another round for Aireontae Ersery, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick108
Rnd4
Jahdae Barron
Taking Jahdae Barron in Round 4, Pick 7 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick144
Rnd5
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at pick No. 144 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick216
Rnd7
Tre Harris
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 216th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick218
Rnd7
Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick228
Rnd7
Xavier Restrepo
They barely believed it either: Xavier Restrepo still on the board at Round 7, Pick 14. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
