Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Lions were there to profit. Caleb Downs, the No. 1 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 50.

A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. Every board in the league had Thomas lower, and that gap is the story. They went 6 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
