ther1 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. Nobody had Caleb Ransaw this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 64 spots to get him at the 255th overall pick. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
However the rest shakes out, Castro at that price is a win they earned. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In pick 11 they get a load in the middle. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at the 43rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at the 75th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Nothing to complain about; Charles Grant went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick112
Rnd4
Gunnar Helm
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Gunnar Helm in slot 112, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick138
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Circle this one: Savion Williams at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139
Rnd4
Jah Joyner
They paid up for Jah Joyner at No. 139 when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick148
Rnd5
Sebastian Castro
They barely believed it either: Sebastian Castro still on the board at pick No. 148. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick189
Rnd6
Clay Webb
Clay Webb in the 189th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick228
Rnd7
Oronde Gadsden II
You do not let a tight end like Oronde Gadsden II reach slot 228 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick232
Rnd7
Nohl Williams
They robbed the room for Nohl Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick255
Rnd7
Caleb Ransaw
Caleb Ransaw at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
