Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB+
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Thor Griffith at the 189th pick is 121 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

Getting Wells Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In pick 12 they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick55 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in Round 2, Pick 23 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jordan Phillips
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jordan Phillips well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick86 Rnd3 Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick99 Rnd3 Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at slot 99 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick112 Rnd4 Ajani Cornelius
They took Ajani Cornelius at par in pick No. 112, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124 Rnd4 Danny Stutsman
Somehow Danny Stutsman was still sitting there in No. 124, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick138 Rnd4 Oronde Gadsden II
By-the-book stuff, Oronde Gadsden II at pick 138 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139 Rnd4 Mitchell Evans
A conviction pick on Mitchell Evans at the 139th pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick189 Rnd6 Thor Griffith
They reached a country mile for Thor Griffith at the 189th overall pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick228 Rnd7 Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. in pick No. 228 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick232 Rnd7 Nick Martin
A real head-scratcher, Nick Martin in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick255 Rnd7 Maxen Hook
No edge and no loss on Maxen Hook in Round 7, Pick 37; it is a wash and a sensible one. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
