GTFLDED DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers robbed the room for James. Final grade: B. The rest of the league will want that one back. DJ James tumbling to the 49ers in the 131st overall pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They are betting Wiley proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The James pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and linebacker. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
JC Latham
In pick 31 they get protection for the quarterback at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
You do not let a cornerback like Cooper DeJean reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ben Sinnott
They reached a country mile for Ben Sinnott at the 94th pick, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick124
Rnd4
Brennan Jackson
Brennan Jackson at the 124th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick131
Rnd4
DJ James
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with DJ James while clear needs at quarterback and linebacker sat open.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jared Wiley
A wild overpay on Jared Wiley in pick No. 133, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick176
Rnd6
Justin Rogers
They went early on Justin Rogers in No. 176, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick211
Rnd6
Dylan Laube
Dylan Laube in slot 211 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215
Rnd6
Ainias Smith
Steal is underselling it; Ainias Smith at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Tylan Grable
They barely believed it either: Tylan Grable still on the board at No. 251. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
