Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureC
The Texans got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while tight end went begging. Abrams-Draine has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Keon Coleman
In the 32nd pick they get a matchup problem out wide, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
They paid sticker price for Jonathon Brooks in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick70
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at Round 3, Pick 6 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in pick 71 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick90
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in slot 90 leaves tight end for later.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in the 94th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick95
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
They paid up for Leonard Taylor III at No. 95 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kris Abrams-Draine this early at the 99th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Foster
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at pick 123, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick163
Rnd5
Austin Booker
A reasonable price with a little left over, Austin Booker in slot 163. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick239
Rnd7
Devin Leary
They jumped the gun on Devin Leary, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
