Draft Grade — Texans

FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Texans: B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with Da'Shawn Womack in No. 242. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. That Slaughter pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon at Round 2, Pick 6 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Nice patience on Jake Slaughter, who had no business lasting to slot 58. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. slid further than he should have, and No. 69 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106
Rnd4
Xavier Chaplin
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Chaplin at pick No. 106 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick126
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
Quietly one of the better values of the day, D'Angelo Ponds at the 126th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick165
Rnd5
Trey Moore
A big swing on Trey Moore at Round 5, Pick 27, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick242
Rnd7
Da'Shawn Womack
Da'Shawn Womack at the 242nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick243
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Good price on Trey Zuhn III in pick No. 243, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
