FutureB-
The Chargers finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D-. Nobody else had Omar Speights anywhere near the 253rd overall pick. The Chargers did, by 88 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Jackson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
It is not that Taylor-Demerson is a bad player; it is that the Chargers had louder needs to answer first.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In the 5th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick11
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick 11 they get the face of the franchise, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick23
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick37
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
A reach on Roman Wilson in No. 37; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69
Rnd3
Blake Corum
The board had cheaper options than Blake Corum at slot 69, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105
Rnd4
Jaden Hicks
Circle this one: Jaden Hicks at the 105th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick110
Rnd4
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in No. 110 leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick140
Rnd5
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson in the 140th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jarrian Jones
They will replay Jarrian Jones at slot 181 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick225
Rnd7
Jha'Quan Jackson
Somehow Jha'Quan Jackson was still sitting there in pick 225, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick253
Rnd7
Omar Speights
Value said wait; Omar Speights in Round 7, Pick 33 says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
