Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC- FutureB-
The 49ers did enough to get by: C+.

The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Shilo Sanders, taking him 35 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.

If Derrick Harmon and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Derrick Harmon
In the 32nd overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43 Rnd2 Josaiah Stewart
A premium they did not need to pay, Josaiah Stewart a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick64 Rnd2 Tate Ratledge
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at slot 64, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant at pick No. 75 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick96 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
A reach on Cam Skattebo in No. 96; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
They took Jared Wilson at par in pick 100, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick113 Rnd4 Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at No. 113 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138 Rnd4 Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore in pick No. 138 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick147 Rnd5 O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune at slot 147 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick160 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
A big swing on JJ Pegues at the 160th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick161 Rnd5 CJ West
They reached into another round for CJ West, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick227 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan in the 227th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick249 Rnd7 John Williams
John Williams at pick 249 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick252 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
This one needs a full-page explanation: Shilo Sanders in Round 7, Pick 36, miles early. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
