The Chiefs cashed the board's mistake on Haulcy: A-. The rest of the league will want that one back. A.J. Haulcy tumbling to the Chiefs in No. 74 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Payne pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
The Chiefs clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In the end it comes back to Zion Young, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick40
Rnd2
Zion Young
Zion Young at Round 2, Pick 8 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick74
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
The board fumbled A.J. Haulcy all the way to pick 74, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick109
Rnd4
Kaytron Allen
Kaytron Allen in the 109th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick146
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
They jumped the gun on Ted Hurst, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick150
Rnd5
Albert Regis
Albert Regis at No. 150 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
A reasonable price with a little left over, Aamil Wagner in the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick177
Rnd5
VJ Payne
They went early on VJ Payne in pick No. 177, and the value did not follow. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick221
Rnd7
TJ Hall
TJ Hall in the 221st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
