Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Saints, and a B to prove it. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Saints reached some 50 spots for TJ Hall, and value like that does not grow back. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
On value alone, Love makes the weekend a net positive. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In slot 8 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jeremiyah Love
Jeremiyah Love at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick73
Rnd3
Dani Dennis-Sutton
They paid up for Dani Dennis-Sutton at the 73rd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132
Rnd4
Skyler Gill-Howard
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Skyler Gill-Howard. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick136
Rnd4
Bud Clark
They read the board right and Bud Clark was the payoff at pick No. 136. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick148
Rnd5
Dametrious Crownover
Dametrious Crownover at Round 5, Pick 10 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick170
Rnd5
TJ Hall
TJ Hall at the 170th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick188
Rnd6
Matt Gulbin
Fair-plus on Matt Gulbin, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
