The Buccaneers landed square in the muddy middle: C. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Buccaneers reached some 74 spots for Tyreak Sapp, and value like that does not grow back.
Johnson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
So much rides on Gabe Jacas that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Gabe Jacas
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick46
Rnd2
Tyreak Sapp
A wild overpay on Tyreak Sapp in the 46th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick77
Rnd3
Justin Joly
Justin Joly at pick No. 77 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick116
Rnd4
Emmett Johnson
Circle this one: Emmett Johnson at pick 116 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick153
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens slipping to No. 153 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick193
Rnd6
Ephesians Prysock
Ephesians Prysock slid further than he should have, and the 193rd overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick229
Rnd7
Jimmy Rolder
Jimmy Rolder is a better player than No. 229 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
