Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Commanders, and a B to prove it.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Blake Watson a full 131 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

Spending an early pick on defensive back with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the 13th overall pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37 Rnd2 Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter in the 37th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick44 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 44 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick76 Rnd3 Quinyon Mitchell
A premium they did not need to pay, Quinyon Mitchell a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick77 Rnd3 Terrion Arnold
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Terrion Arnold adds a defensive back and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jaheim Bell
The board had cheaper options than Jaheim Bell at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mohamed Kamara. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick113 Rnd4 Cade Stover
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent the 113th overall pick on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick149 Rnd5 Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing at the 149th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190 Rnd6 Blake Watson
Blake Watson in slot 190 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick191 Rnd6 DeWayne Carter
DeWayne Carter in pick 191 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick233 Rnd7 Gavin Bartholomew
Gavin Bartholomew at No. 233 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
