Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Commanders won the night they stopped Colson from sliding. Grade: A-.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Commanders were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Colson. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. Every board in the league had Wiley lower, and that gap is the story.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

In the end it comes back to JC Latham, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 JC Latham
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in slot 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick37 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
A reach for Jackson Powers-Johnson in No. 37; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick38 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson in pick No. 38 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick40 Rnd2 Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice at the 40th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick67 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 67th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick69 Rnd3 Chris Braswell
Value with a capital V on Chris Braswell in pick 69, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick100 Rnd3 Cade Stover
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick102 Rnd4 Junior Colson
Taking Junior Colson in the 102nd pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick110 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
A clean, defensible pick in slot 110 with a little surplus value in Khyree Jackson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick141 Rnd5 Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the 141st overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick181 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
They talked themselves into Jared Wiley at No. 181, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick184 Rnd6 Javon Baker
Fair-plus on Javon Baker, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick223 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman is a better player than Round 7, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
