Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Cardinals checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Priorities are a choice, and the Cardinals made a strange one, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE in the 104th pick with running back and tight end crying out for the pick instead.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Lovett pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In the 18th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick66
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Lynn Polk. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Austin Booker
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Austin Booker. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick82
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
Andru Phillips in pick No. 82 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick90
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They took Sedrick Van Pran at par in the 90th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick104
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 104 on Javon Solomon with running back and tight end unsolved.
Pick138
Rnd5
Michael Pratt
No drama and no debate, Michael Pratt went about where he belonged in pick 138. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick162
Rnd5
Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in Round 5, Pick 26 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick191
Rnd6
Isaiah Williams
Isaiah Williams at the 191st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jackson Sirmon
Jackson Sirmon at No. 226 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
