Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a B-, for the Raiders. Start where it matters. The Raiders took Fernando Mendoza to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Slaughter. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Coogan pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In No. 1 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
A reasonable price with a little left over, Caleb Banks in pick No. 33. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick65
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Slaughter in the 65th pick, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick101
Rnd4
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in slot 101 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick118
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chase Bisontis. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick136
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller in the 136th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick175
Rnd5
Lander Barton
A straight-up fair deal on Lander Barton at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick182
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in pick 182 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick183
Rnd6
Josh Moten
They jumped the gun on Josh Moten, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Pat Coogan in Round 7, Pick 1, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
