Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureA+
A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a D+, for the Raiders. The phones were a trap the Raiders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Every board in the league had Kearney lower, and that gap is the story. The Cooper Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick12
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
The board had cheaper options than Gennings Dunker at the 12th overall pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick20
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In the 20th pick they get an island corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
LT Overton
A reach for LT Overton in Round 2, Pick 4; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Value with a capital V on Deontae Lawson in No. 67, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick102
Rnd4
Omar Cooper Jr.
They will replay Omar Cooper Jr. at pick No. 102 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jack Endries
Jack Endries in slot 117 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jakobe Thomas
A slide stopped in the Round 4 slot, with Jakobe Thomas worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick174
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
A reasonable price with a little left over, Pat Coogan in the Round 5 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick180
Rnd6
Raylen Wilson
They took Raylen Wilson at par in No. 180, which is nothing to complain about. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick183
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They jumped the gun on Trey Zuhn III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick219
Rnd7
Roderick Kearney
They paid up for Roderick Kearney at pick 219 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
