FutureB
The Raiders found their guy under center in Mendoza: D-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Pat Coogan at Round 6, Pick 28 is 50 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Everything downstream of Fernando Mendoza depends on Fernando Mendoza, and the building knows it. That Lawson pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In slot 2 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick16
Rnd1
Matayo Uiagalelei
In pick No. 16 they get a disruptor off the edge, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17
Rnd1
LT Overton
In No. 17 they get a bendy edge with upside, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks in the 36th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A clean, defensible pick in pick 67 with a little surplus value in A'Mauri Washington. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
A slide stopped in the 76th overall pick, with Deontae Lawson worth more than the price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick102
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
Genesis Smith in pick 102 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
They did well to land D'Angelo Ponds in Round 4, Pick 17, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick118
Rnd4
Blake Miller
They talked themselves into Blake Miller at pick No. 118, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price in the 134th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jakobe Thomas
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jakobe Thomas at the Round 5 slot is the proof. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick174
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kevin Coleman Jr.. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
No edge and no loss on Bryce Boettcher in the 180th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick182
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
They jumped the gun on DJ Campbell, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick185
Rnd6
Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at the 185th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick188
Rnd6
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp in pick 188 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick209
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Value said wait; Pat Coogan in the 209th overall pick says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick219
Rnd7
Raylen Wilson
Raylen Wilson in pick No. 219 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick222
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at No. 222 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
