The Cowboys let Stout fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Upton Stout, the No. 178 name on the board, stolen at pick No. 249. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They are betting Jackson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the offensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In slot 12 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick45
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
Fair-plus on Tyleik Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick76
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the running back. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick116
Rnd4
Cody Simon
A premium they did not need to pay, Cody Simon a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick150
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman at pick 150 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick152
Rnd5
Raheim Sanders
A tidy little value on Raheim Sanders in Round 5, Pick 13, a step better than break-even. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick170
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 170th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick172
Rnd5
Cam Jackson
They reached into another round for Cam Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick174
Rnd5
Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. in pick 174 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190
Rnd6
Nohl Williams
Value with a capital V on Nohl Williams in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211
Rnd6
DJ Giddens
They will replay DJ Giddens at Round 6, Pick 33 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Upton Stout
Upton Stout in the 249th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
