Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
C
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
Jones should have been long gone. The Texans pounced, and earned a C. Call it larceny. Christian Jones sat on the board until the Round 7 slot, and the Texans did not need to be asked twice.
Reaching for Abrams-Draine left real value on the table behind him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
If Rome Odunze and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 23 they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick70
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in Round 3, Pick 6; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Gabriel Murphy in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Leonard Taylor III. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick98
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kris Abrams-Draine well ahead of where he belonged. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick124
Rnd4
James Williams
They jumped the gun on James Williams, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
A reach on Jaheim Bell in slot 128; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jaylen Wright
A big swing on Jaylen Wright at No. 140, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick161
Rnd5
Edefuan Ulofoshio
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edefuan Ulofoshio. The roster fit checks out.
Pick236
Rnd7
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at No. 236 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick245
Rnd7
Ryan Watts
Somehow Ryan Watts was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 25, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
