FutureB
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Bears. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Bears took Malik Verdon a full 81 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. Getting Warren where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In slot 27 they get a seam-stretching tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick39
Rnd2
Landon Jackson
They paid sticker price for Landon Jackson in No. 39, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick44
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
They liked TreVeyon Henderson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 44. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick46
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in the 46th overall pick, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deone Walker
The board had cheaper options than Deone Walker at Round 3, Pick 12, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick148
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick149
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson at No. 149 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick233
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaac TeSlaa. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick239
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
A big swing on Hunter Wohler at slot 239, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick240
Rnd7
Malik Verdon
They left a pile of value on the table to take Malik Verdon this early at Round 7, Pick 24. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
