Iowradar DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-

FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Kyle Monangai fell into the Round 7 slot.
The Truss reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 11th overall pick they get an island corner. More want than need.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
The board fumbled Jalon Walker all the way to pick No. 43, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
They paid sticker price for Jared Ivey in No. 75, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100
Rnd3
Anthony Belton
They paid up for Anthony Belton at slot 100 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
A clean, defensible pick in pick 113 with a little surplus value in Jordan Phillips. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jonas Sanker
They let Jonas Sanker come to them and pounced at pick No. 147. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick160
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A wild overpay on JJ Pegues in the 160th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick173
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 5 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick183
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
A reasonable price with a little left over, Raheim Sanders in the 183rd pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick227
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at Round 7, Pick 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick243
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner at the 243rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
Kyle Monangai at pick No. 249 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss in No. 252 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
