The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The 49ers took Khristian Boyd at slot 133, roughly 45 spots before his name belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
However the rest shakes out, Johnson at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In the 31st pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Melton
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Melton a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at No. 94 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124
Rnd4
Brennan Jackson
A wild overpay on Brennan Jackson in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick131
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 131 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Khristian Boyd
A real head-scratcher, Khristian Boyd in Round 4, Pick 33 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylen Harrell in the Round 6 slot, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Taking Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 211 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid up for Frank Gore Jr. at pick 215 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
A reach on Joshua Cephus in the 251st pick; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
