Winston Jr. should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.

Every board in the league had Pegues lower, and that gap is the story. Landing Winston Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker at pick 41 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick42 Rnd2 Cameron Williams
Cameron Williams in the 42nd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick43 Rnd2 Matthew Golden
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Matthew Golden. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.

Quietly one of the better values of the day, Azareye'h Thomas at the 75th overall pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.

Donovan Jackson in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.

Shemar Turner in pick 121 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.

A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Slater a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.

The board fumbled Brashard Smith all the way to No. 145, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
