Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Barrett Carter got past him. The Giants do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 179. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A.

Reaching for Griffith left real value on the table behind him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

The veteran additions, Rhamondre Stevenson chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
