Draft Grade — Ravens
Overall
C+
ValueC
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Ravens: C+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Ravens reached some 56 spots for Tyler Batty, and value like that does not grow back. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. The Ravens indulged a want in Burnip while a need in cornerback, quarterback and other spots stayed open. They banked enough surplus on Thornton Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Hit on Emeka Egbuka and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In the 27th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. A real need, handled.
Pick59
Rnd2
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte at pick No. 59 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick91
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
They took Kevin Winston Jr. at par in the 91st pick, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick129
Rnd4
James Burnip
Of all the spots to shop, they chose specialist. James Burnip in No. 129 leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick136
Rnd4
Que Robinson
Que Robinson in Round 4, Pick 34 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick176
Rnd5
RJ Oben
They reached into another round for RJ Oben, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick183
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
Tyler Batty at pick 183 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick203
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 203 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick210
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Pick212
Rnd6
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson slipping to slot 212 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick243
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Desmond Watson at the 243rd overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
