Draft Grade — Panthers

The Panthers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

The Ahmed Hassanein pick is the one that will follow the Panthers into the fall. They took him 110 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

The Mickens value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 James Pearce Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick57 Rnd2 Jared Ivey
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Ivey this early at pick 57. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74 Rnd3 Jah Joyner
Value said wait; Jah Joyner in slot 74 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick110 Rnd4 Ahmed Hassanein
They reached a country mile for Ahmed Hassanein at pick No. 110, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick113 Rnd4 Charles Grant
Charles Grant slipping to No. 113 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick141 Rnd5 Aeneas Peebles
A straight-up fair deal on Aeneas Peebles at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick147 Rnd5 Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in pick 147 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick164 Rnd5 Ethan Downs
A wild overpay on Ethan Downs in No. 164, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick229 Rnd7 R.J. Mickens
A top-tier safety at a bargain, R.J. Mickens in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
