Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Adepoju Adebawore a full 43 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Thieneman makes the weekend a net positive. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Denzel Boston
In No. 30 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman slid further than he should have, and pick 62 is lovely value for the safety. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94 Rnd3 Austin Barber
Fair-plus on Austin Barber, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick129 Rnd4 Chris Johnson
They let Chris Johnson come to them and pounced at pick No. 129. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick130 Rnd4 Bryce Lance
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Bryce Lance. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick169 Rnd5 J'Mari Taylor
J'Mari Taylor at the 169th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick191 Rnd6 Adepoju Adebawore
Value said wait; Adepoju Adebawore in pick No. 191 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick201 Rnd6 Kobe Baynes
Kobe Baynes at the 201st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick208 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
They reached into another round for Patrick Payton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick211 Rnd6 Lee Hunter
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lee Hunter. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick246 Rnd7 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at No. 246 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
