FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Rams. Thirty-one other rooms let Andru Phillips slide, and the Rams were the ones holding the card at the Round 6 slot. Highway robbery. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The cost of the Jennings reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Rams indulged a want in Sainristil while a need in wide receiver, running back and other spots stayed open.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick52
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
They did well to land Kris Jenkins in the 52nd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick64
Rnd2
Josh Newton
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 32 with a little surplus value in Josh Newton. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick84
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at Round 3, Pick 20 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick95
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
A curious use of slot 95. Wide receiver, running back and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Mike Sainristil did not.
Pick157
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
No drama and no debate, Joe Milton III went about where he belonged in pick No. 157. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick158
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
A straight-up fair deal on LaDarius Henderson at the 158th pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick169
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
The board had Kitan Oladapo higher than pick 169, and the safety fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick191
Rnd6
Andru Phillips
Andru Phillips in the Round 6 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick214
Rnd6
Omar Speights
Omar Speights slid further than he should have, and the 214th overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick216
Rnd6
Phil Jurkovec
A premium they did not need to pay, Phil Jurkovec a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick218
Rnd6
Donovan Jennings
A big swing on Donovan Jennings at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick221
Rnd7
Myles Jones
Myles Jones slipping to Round 7, Pick 1 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
