Slaughter should have been long gone. The Rams pounced, and earned a B. You could see the war room lean forward. Jake Slaughter at the 61st overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Alexander to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In No. 8 they get an enforcer at safety. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick29
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
Carnell Tate slipping to slot 29 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick61
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Taking Jake Slaughter in pick 61 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick93
Rnd3
Keith Abney II
Value with a capital V on Keith Abney II in the 93rd pick, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick169
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
Good price on Tanner Koziol in Round 5, Pick 29, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick192
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 192, where Duce Robinson graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick207
Rnd6
Raylen Wilson
They took Raylen Wilson at par in the 207th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick228
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Zuhn III. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247
Rnd7
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander in the 247th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
