Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueA- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots let Washington fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

Call it larceny. A'Mauri Washington sat on the board until No. 85, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Jeremiah Smith
In pick 20 they get a matchup problem out wide at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick51 Rnd2 Clev Lubin
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Clev Lubin graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick85 Rnd3 A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington in the 85th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick121 Rnd4 Peyton Bowen
Peyton Bowen at Round 4, Pick 20 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick166 Rnd5 Kemari Copeland
Kemari Copeland at pick No. 166 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick183 Rnd6 Whit Weeks
You do not let a linebacker like Whit Weeks reach slot 183 and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick186 Rnd6 Mateen Ibirogba
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mateen Ibirogba in the 186th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211 Rnd6 Coen Echols
Coen Echols at No. 211 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick253 Rnd7 Emmanuel Karnley
They will replay Emmanuel Karnley at slot 253 for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick257 Rnd7 C.J. Fite
Taking C.J. Fite in Round 7, Pick 36 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
