Draft Grade — Steelers

Grand theft in the 214th overall pick: the Steelers steal Mensah and grade out a B-.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Darian Mensah got past him. The Steelers do not have to explain a thing at No. 214. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Foster pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
In the 20th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick51 Rnd2 John Mateer
John Mateer at pick No. 51 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick79 Rnd3 Drew Shelton
A reach on Drew Shelton in slot 79; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick84 Rnd3 LaNorris Sellers
LaNorris Sellers at Round 3, Pick 20 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick99 Rnd3 Joe Royer
They read the board right and Joe Royer was the payoff at the 99th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick119 Rnd4 Adon Shuler
A safety of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at No. 133 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160 Rnd5 Kyle Louis
A premium they did not need to pay, Kyle Louis a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick213 Rnd6 Quinten Joyner
They paid up for Quinten Joyner at No. 213 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick214 Rnd6 Darian Mensah
You do not let a quarterback like Darian Mensah reach the 214th pick and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick219 Rnd7 Bryce Foster
A big swing on Bryce Foster at the 219th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick235 Rnd7 Daevin Hobbs
Daevin Hobbs at pick 235 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
