Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Raiders answered their biggest question with Mendoza. Grade: B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Solomon Tuliaupupu; the Raiders did not wait, grabbing him 96 spots ahead at pick No. 176.
Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Ponds makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In slot 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon at Round 2, Pick 4 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at No. 67 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick102
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
A wild overpay on Charles Jagusah in pick 102, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and D'Angelo Ponds at the 117th overall pick is the proof. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
A reach for Jacob Rodriguez in the 135th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick176
Rnd5
Solomon Tuliaupupu
They reached into another round for Solomon Tuliaupupu, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick181
Rnd6
Luke Altmyer
A real head-scratcher, Luke Altmyer in No. 181 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick184
Rnd6
Rayshaun Benny
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Rayshaun Benny. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick219
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the 219th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
