The Raiders found their guy under center in Mendoza: B-. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Raiders spent their marquee pick on Fernando Mendoza, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Brown has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Ponds falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick 1 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
CJ Allen
CJ Allen at No. 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick67
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds is a better player than the 67th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick102
Rnd4
Nicholas Singleton
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Nicholas Singleton. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
Jalon Kilgore at slot 117 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick134
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in the 134th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
Barion Brown
They talked themselves into Barion Brown at pick No. 174, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. in Round 6, Pick 1 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick183
Rnd6
Earnest Greene III
The board had Earnest Greene III higher than Round 6, Pick 4, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick219
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
A tidy bit of business in the 219th overall pick, where Diego Pavia graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
