Draft Grade — Raiders

The Raiders drew a line under the quarterback search with Ward: B.

The Raiders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jeffrey Bassa, the No. 121 name on the board, in No. 223.

Cam Ward is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They will need Ersery to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Cam Ward
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick39 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at pick No. 39 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. in Round 3, Pick 5 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick70 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in the 70th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick106 Rnd4 TreVeyon Henderson
The board fumbled TreVeyon Henderson all the way to No. 106, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick146 Rnd5 Jake Majors
Taking Jake Majors in slot 146 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick183 Rnd6 Danny Stutsman
Somehow Danny Stutsman was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick212 Rnd6 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe at the 212th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick216 Rnd6 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at pick 216 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at pick No. 223 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
