Sicilian DRAFTING FOR THECowboys
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Cowboys let King fall and pounced. Final grade: B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Kobe King slide 43 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In the 12th overall pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tetairoa McMillan
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tetairoa McMillan in pick 44, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at the 76th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at slot 149 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171
Rnd5
Kobe King
Circle this one: Kobe King at No. 171 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
Riley Leonard
You do not let a quarterback like Riley Leonard reach pick No. 174 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
By-the-book stuff, Jay Higgins at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211
Rnd6
Caleb Rogers
The board had Caleb Rogers higher than Round 6, Pick 35, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick239
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah at pick No. 239 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick247
Rnd7
Zeek Biggers
No edge and no loss on Zeek Biggers in Round 7, Pick 31; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
