Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
McCarthy is the plan now, and the Steelers grade out a D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Steelers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.

Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots went begging. They will need Frazier to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

However the rest shakes out, Vaki at that price is a win they earned.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 25 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick51 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in slot 51 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick57 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa at the 57th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick58 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 2 slot on Kingsley Suamataia with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots unsolved.
Pick84 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ja'Lynn Polk at Round 3, Pick 20. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick89 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
They went early on Brenden Rice in pick 89, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick125 Rnd4 Christian Jones
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Christian Jones while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
Pick178 Rnd6 Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki in the 178th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick195 Rnd6 Ro Torrence
A tidy bit of business in No. 195, where Ro Torrence graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
