FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Steelers a B+. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Thor Griffith in the Round 7 slot.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
They banked enough surplus on Slater to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick52
Rnd2
Trey Amos
They paid sticker price for Trey Amos in the 52nd overall pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick83
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins is a better player than No. 83 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough at the 122nd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jackson Slater
Taking Jackson Slater in pick 163 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick192
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board fumbled Dont'e Thornton Jr. all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick225
Rnd7
Jonas Sanker
Jonas Sanker at the 225th pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick231
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
The board had Trevor Etienne higher than pick 231, and the running back fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at the 247th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
