The Raiders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B-. The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on Fernando Mendoza, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Every board in the league had Henry Jr. lower, and that gap is the story. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With tight end and interior defensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick No. 1 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at No. 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick102
Rnd4
Caden Curry
No edge and no loss on Caden Curry in the 102nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick117
Rnd4
Bishop Fitzgerald
A quiet steal in the 117th pick: Bishop Fitzgerald for less than the market said. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick134
Rnd4
Louis Moore
A want over a need in slot 134: Louis Moore adds a safety while tight end and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick174
Rnd5
Kaleb Elarms-Orr
By-the-book stuff, Kaleb Elarms-Orr at pick 174 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick180
Rnd6
Robert Henry Jr.
Robert Henry Jr. at Round 6, Pick 1 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jimmy Rolder
Jimmy Rolder in No. 183 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick219
Rnd7
DJ Harvey
DJ Harvey at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
