Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C+

The Steelers landed square in the muddy middle: C+.

The Steelers went off the board in a big way for Xavier Thomas, 40 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.

Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick52 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A curious use of No. 52. Interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Patrick Paul did not.
Pick84 Rnd3 Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil at pick No. 84 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick120 Rnd4 James Williams
James Williams at the 120th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick121 Rnd4 Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis in Round 4, Pick 21 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick198 Rnd6 Sheridan Jones
Sheridan Jones at slot 198 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at pick 238 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
