Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureB
The 49ers robbed the room for Reed. Final grade: D.

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the 49ers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.

The cost of the Pegues reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Reed value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
In No. 14 they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
Steal is underselling it; Nick Emmanwori at the 43rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick44 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
A linebacker of that caliber at the 44th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
They took Donovan Jackson at par in slot 75, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick76 Rnd3 Alfred Collins
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Alfred Collins reach Round 3, Pick 12 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick80 Rnd3 Elijah Arroyo
A reasonable price with a little left over, Elijah Arroyo in pick No. 80. The roster fit checks out.
Pick99 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 99 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick112 Rnd4 Savion Williams
Savion Williams at the 112th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick138 Rnd4 Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick139 Rnd4 Joshua Farmer
The board fumbled Joshua Farmer all the way to pick 139, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick148 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
They left a pile of value on the table to take JJ Pegues this early at No. 148. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick152 Rnd5 Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson in the 152nd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick189 Rnd6 Hayden Conner
They reached into another round for Hayden Conner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick228 Rnd7 Nohl Williams
They barely believed it either: Nohl Williams still on the board at slot 228. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jaylen Reed
They robbed the room for Jaylen Reed here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick255 Rnd7 Trevor Etienne
Taking Trevor Etienne in pick 255 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
