Jon-Luke B DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Jalen Thompson a full 43 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Landing Weigman that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
In the 19th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at slot 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick86
Rnd3
Harold Perkins Jr.
A reach for Harold Perkins Jr. in pick No. 86; a little patience would have been rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick113
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
They paid sticker price for Tacario Davis in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick121
Rnd4
CJ Baxter
They paid up for CJ Baxter at pick 121 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick159
Rnd5
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at the 159th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick197
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
Nolan Rucci at the 197th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick202
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
The board had cheaper options than Bryce Foster at pick No. 202, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224
Rnd7
Conner Weigman
Value with a capital V on Conner Weigman in No. 224, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
A big swing on Jalen Thompson at the 241st overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
