Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it.

Nobody had Braylan Shelby this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 39 spots to get him at pick No. 253. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 A'Mauri Washington
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick51 Rnd2 Ryan Coleman-Williams
A tidy little value on Ryan Coleman-Williams in pick 51, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick85 Rnd3 Peyton Bowen
Fair-plus on Peyton Bowen, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick121 Rnd4 DJ McKinney
A big swing on DJ McKinney at Round 4, Pick 20, well ahead of any board in the building. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick166 Rnd5 Whit Weeks
A clean, defensible pick in the 166th pick with a little surplus value in Whit Weeks. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick183 Rnd6 Hollywood Smothers
Hollywood Smothers at the 183rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick186 Rnd6 Lawson Luckie
They left a pile of value on the table to take Lawson Luckie this early at pick No. 186. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick211 Rnd6 Malachi Breland
They talked themselves into Malachi Breland at pick 211, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick253 Rnd7 Braylan Shelby
They reached a country mile for Braylan Shelby at Round 7, Pick 32, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick257 Rnd7 Johntay Cook
They paid sticker price for Johntay Cook in slot 257, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
