Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesB+ FutureC-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Steelers get a C+.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Steelers took Jordan Travis at pick No. 139, roughly 34 spots before his name belonged.

It is not that Guyton is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

Hit on Jackson Powers-Johnson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 26th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front. Need was not the driver here.
Pick36 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Tyler Guyton while clear needs at edge rusher and tight end sat open.
Pick57 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy in pick No. 57 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick84 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in pick 84. It fills a real need, too.
Pick98 Rnd3 Javon Solomon
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves edge rusher and tight end untouched.
Pick100 Rnd3 Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at Round 3, Pick 37 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick137 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They liked Luke McCaffrey enough to skip the value, taking him in the 137th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick139 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
They reached into another round for Jordan Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick178 Rnd6 Sione Vaki
They barely believed it either: Sione Vaki still on the board at the 178th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick180 Rnd6 Ro Torrence
They paid sticker price for Ro Torrence in No. 180, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford at pick 195 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick222 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 7, Pick 2 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
