Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA FutureB-
The Raiders found their guy under center in McCarthy: B.

The search is over. The Raiders handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.

They will need Greenfield to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Rice at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 31st pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick44 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 44 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick51 Rnd2 Braden Fiske
They took Braden Fiske at par in pick 51, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick72 Rnd3 Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia is a better player than the 72nd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick82 Rnd3 Max Melton
Nothing to complain about; Max Melton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick98 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in Round 3, Pick 35 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick111 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
Good price on Braelon Allen in No. 111, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick112 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
A reach on Theo Johnson in slot 112; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Pick117 Rnd4 Brenden Rice
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Brenden Rice in No. 117, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick124 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
They paid a round early for Mohamed Kamara in Round 4, Pick 24, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick148 Rnd5 Tyrone Tracy Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyrone Tracy Jr. at pick No. 148, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick178 Rnd6 Garret Greenfield
A wild overpay on Garret Greenfield in the 178th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick185 Rnd6 Logan Lee
Logan Lee in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick208 Rnd6 Julian Pearl
They did well to land Julian Pearl in slot 208, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at pick 223 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick229 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens at the 229th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
