Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB
The Panthers won the night they stopped Phillips from sliding. Grade: B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Panthers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
That is an interior defensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Hairston pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In No. 14 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick57
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in slot 57 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick64
Rnd2
Carson Schwesinger
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Carson Schwesinger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
The board fumbled Jordan Phillips all the way to the 128th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick140
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
Fair-plus on Hollin Pierce, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 146 with a little surplus value in Trevor Etienne. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick153
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
Andres Borregales in Round 5, Pick 15 is fair value, right on his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick163
Rnd5
Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant in the 163rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick218
Rnd7
Cam Horsley
Cam Horsley at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick230
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
Nothing to complain about; Carson Vinson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
