FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Lions a B. Nobody else had Ricardo Hallman anywhere near Round 7, Pick 6. The Lions did, by 87 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Landing Payne that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Isaiah Rodgers Sr. deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Akheem Mesidor
In pick No. 18 they get a bendy edge with upside, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick50
Rnd2
Brian Parker II
They talked themselves into Brian Parker II at the Round 2 slot, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick82
Rnd3
Julian Neal
Julian Neal at No. 82 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick118
Rnd4
Kyle Louis
A wild overpay on Kyle Louis in the 118th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick155
Rnd5
Sam Roush
They took Sam Roush at par in Round 5, Pick 17, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick186
Rnd6
Matt Gulbin
Nice patience on Matt Gulbin, who had no business lasting to the 186th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick203
Rnd6
VJ Payne
The board had VJ Payne higher than No. 203, and the safety fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick212
Rnd6
Nick Barrett
Nick Barrett in the 212th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick222
Rnd7
Ricardo Hallman
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ricardo Hallman this early at pick No. 222. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
