Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesD FutureA
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Panthers: B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Luke Lachey at pick 163 is 45 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

With quarterback and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on interior defensive lineman is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Getting Alexander where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Jalon Walker
In No. 30 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts is a better player than slot 56 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick57 Rnd2 Jayden Higgins
No drama and no debate, Jayden Higgins went about where he belonged in the 57th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick74 Rnd3 Deone Walker
Deone Walker in pick No. 74 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick111 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
A surprising call. With quarterback and running back still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Darius Alexander, an interior defensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick114 Rnd4 Denzel Burke
No edge and no loss on Denzel Burke in the 114th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick140 Rnd5 Malachi Moore
They took Malachi Moore at par in No. 140, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146 Rnd5 Tyler Baron
They paid up for Tyler Baron at the 146th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163 Rnd5 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in Round 5, Pick 25 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick230 Rnd7 Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson at slot 230 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
